Solar Sister is an organization dedicated to empowering women and addressing energy poverty in last-mile communities by recruiting, training, and supporting women to become entrepreneurs in the clean energy sector. When empowered female entrepreneurs bring affordable, clean energy products to their communities, livelihoods are improved thanks to regular access to energy, and the effects of climate change are mitigated while CO2 emissions are reduced. Women gain footing on which to build a more equitable future for themselves and their families. Since its inception, Solar Sister has supported more than 11,000 women across Africa who have reached over 5 million people with life-changing renewable energy products
Fellowship Description:
The person in this position will work closely with both the global and local Monitoring and Evaluation Managers to support the planning and implementation of Solar Sister’s annual entrepreneur impact survey. The fellow will play a key role in coordinating the survey team, conducting phone-based interviews, and ensuring high-quality data is collected. This role will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in large-scale survey deployment, data collection, and team leadership.
Responsibilities include:
- Support the planning and deployment of Solar Sister’s year-end entrepreneur survey, coordinating teams across Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria.
- Assist with survey sampling, including developing and validating the survey contact list for enumerators.
- Conduct phone-based survey interviews with Solar Sister entrepreneurs, adhering to established survey protocols and ethical data collection practices.
- Coordinate and provide day-to-day guidance to the enumerator team, ensuring survey targets, timelines, and quality standards are met.
- Conduct routine data quality checks throughout the survey process.
- Assist with preliminary data cleaning, analysis, and summary reporting following survey completion.
- Other administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
- Current student or recent graduate within the last 2 years
- Experience conducting surveys, interviews, or other field data collection activities.
- Interest in nonprofit work, survey deployment, and monitoring and evaluation.
- Comfortable with spreadsheets and data entry.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating or leading small teams, volunteers, or field staff.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and across time zones as part of a global team.
- Professional proficiency in Swahili is strongly preferred, English required.
- Ability to work during East Africa business hours is strongly preferred.
Time Commitment: 30 hours per week
