Land, Water and Food Justice Fellow
About the Organization:
The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a global fellowship of 256 national Protestant and Orthodox churches present in 120 countries, with a total membership of about 600 million people worldwide. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the WCC was founded in 1948. The organization works to promote ecumenism, mission, evangelism, and Christian unity while also advancing nearly all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and related global initiatives. WCC has been actively addressing climate change and care for creation since the 1970s, well before the Earth Summit and the establishment of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Fellowship Description:
The Land, Water and Food Justice Fellow will provide virtual support to the Land, Water and Food Justice and Advocacy program of the World Council of Churches through the Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development. The role includes assisting with research, editing, report writing, and documentation on issues related to land, water, and food justice. The fellow will also contribute to the production of newsletters and WCC publications, including The Living Planet Monitor and Together for Water newsletter. Assistance with fundraising efforts for these projects is also welcomed.
Duties and Expectations:
i) Provide administrative, editorial, and creative support to the editorial team in producing the WCC Ecumenical Water Network Newsletter, Together for Water, including compiling content and soliciting articles from contributors.
ii) Conduct research on climate change, land, water, and food justice and provide administrative, editorial, and creative assistance to aid in the development of the WCC publication, The Living Planet Monitor, including content compilation and coordination with feature-story contributors.
iii) Assist with planning and coordination for World Water Day and the WCC Seven Weeks for Water 2027 online Lenten campaign.
iv) Support the preparation of concept notes and content for seminars and webinars related to land, water, and food issues, including events such as Global Handwashing Day, World Toilet Day, and World Food Day among others, as well as participation in meetings of the Committee on World Food Security. v) Support the preparation for and participation of WCC in COP31 (UNFCCC) 2026 and UN Water Conference 2026 by preparing concept notes, compiling reports through online participation and secondary research.
vi) Complete additional assignments as directed by the supervisor, the Programme Executive, within the scope of the internship.
vii) Assist with fundraising initiatives, including identifying and applying for potential funding opportunities on behalf of the WCC. The fellow will report to Mr. Dinesh Suna, Programme Executive for Ecumenical Advocacy for Land, Water and Food Justice (EALWFJ).
Qualifications:
1. Strong research, editorial, design, and communication skills.
2. Familiarity with issues surrounding the human right to water and sanitation is desirable.
3. Should have a preferential consideration for marginalised communities.
4. Show interest in climate justice issues and/or currently pursuing or have completed an education in Sustainability, Ecology, Food Systems, Climate, Water, or a related field.
Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
