BlueGea Group

Digital Systems & Data Platform Fellow

About the Organization:

BlueGea Group is a blue biotechnology company based in the Dominican Republic, composed of two private companies, SOS Carbon and SOS Biotech, and an NGO, The Terra & Marre Foundation. The group works harvesting and upcycling sargassum, an invasive floating seaweed that accumulates in massive quantities along the Caribbean and Atlantic coastlines. As it decomposes, it releases methane, CO2, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, with gas concentrations measured at up to 35 times recommended exposure limits, while generating over US$1.5 billion in annual economic losses across tourism, fisheries, coastal infrastructure and public health. BlueGea has developed a vertically integrated model that harvests sargassum before it reaches the shoreline using a patented technology that retrofits local fishing vessels into high-capacity collection units. The harvested biomass is then upcycled through the company's proprietary biorefinery into bio-based agricultural inputs that reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers. By integrating marine restoration with industrial biotechnology, BlueGea mitigates the environmental and public health impacts of invasive seaweed while creating circular economy solutions for agriculture and new income opportunities for coastal communities.

Fellowship Description:

The Digital Systems & Data Platform Fellow will support the design and development of BlueGea's internal digital infrastructure to centralize operational, commercial, production, and impact data into a single platform. As our organization continues to grow, we are looking for someone who can help us replace fragmented spreadsheets and manual processes with scalable digital systems that improve data accessibility and decision-making. The fellow will work closely with our team to map internal workflows, design databases and dashboards, and develop the first version of an internal platform to track key information such as sargassum harvesting operations, production batches, inventory, sales, customers, and impact metrics. Responsibilities may also include integrating existing tools, automating reporting processes, improving data visualization, and proposing digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency across departments.

Qualifications:

1. Background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field.

2. Experience with database design and web application development.

3. Familiarity with low-code/no-code platforms (e.g., Retool, Appsmith, FlutterFlow), or modern web development frameworks is a plus.

4. Experience working with SQL, APIs, spreadsheets and data visualization tools.

5. Interest in building practical digital solutions for growing organizations.

6. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to understand operational workflows.

7. Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment.

8. Interest in sustainability, climate technologies, or the blue economy is an asset.

Time Commitment: 18-25 hours per week
