BlueGea Group
International Business Development Fellow
About the Organization:
BlueGea Group is a blue biotechnology company based in the Dominican Republic, composed of two private companies, SOS Carbon and SOS Biotech, and an NGO, The Terra & Marre Foundation. The group works harvesting and upcycling sargassum, an invasive floating seaweed that accumulates in massive quantities along the Caribbean and Atlantic coastlines. As it decomposes, it releases methane, CO2, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, with gas concentrations measured at up to 35 times recommended exposure limits, while generating over US$1.5 billion in annual economic losses across tourism, fisheries, coastal infrastructure and public health. BlueGea has developed a vertically integrated model that harvests sargassum before it reaches the shoreline using a patented technology that retrofits local fishing vessels into high-capacity collection units. The harvested biomass is then upcycled through the company's proprietary biorefinery into bio-based agricultural inputs that reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers. By integrating marine restoration with industrial biotechnology, BlueGea mitigates the environmental and public health impacts of invasive seaweed while creating circular economy solutions for agriculture and new income opportunities for coastal communities.
