About the Organization: 

Isla Urbana aspires to make reliable, safe, and sustainable water access possible for communities across Mexico, particularly rural, Indigenous, and vulnerable urban communities underserved by conventional infrastructure. Through rainwater harvesting, purification, education, local training, and long-term system support, we help families, schools, and community spaces build greater water autonomy and resilience.
The barriers we address include intermittent or nonexistent water service, unsafe water quality, inadequate storage and infrastructure, rising water costs, and the time and physical burden of hauling water which increases the risk of chronic health conditions. These challenges disproportionately affect women, children, and families with limited resources. In schools, water shortages can restrict restroom use, disrupt meals and hygiene, and even lead to class cancellations. Water access is projected to grow more difficult worldwide as climate change intensifies drought and unpredictable rainfall. Our programs from Isla Urbana USA already prepare vulnerable communities in Mexico to adapt to these pressures, while building a bilateral exchange of knowledge and awareness with students in the United States and Canada, many of whom come from Latino communities themselves navigating water and climate vulnerability or having family in Mexico facing those challenges.
Our work is grounded in the belief that water is a foundation for wellbeing. When communities have dependable access to water, they are better able to rest instead of spending hours each day searching for or hauling this basic resource. By pairing practical technology with community participation and local capacity building, we seek to create lasting solutions that communities can manage, maintain, and build upon over time.

Fellowship Description: 

At Isla Urbana US, we are expanding our nonprofit's international reach. To achieve this, we seek a dedicated individual to enhance and build upon our current communication strategy across various platforms, including web, fundraising campaigns, print, digital media, and social media (mainly Instagram). This role involves close collaboration with the Isla Urbana US team.

Key Responsibilities:

- Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy across multiple platforms.

- Conduct market research to support content creation and strategy development for the US demographic.

- Proofread and edit content to ensure accuracy and consistency.

We are looking for more than just a professional. We are looking for someone who is deeply passionate about water equity, access, sustainable development, and community building. The ideal candidate will have the drive to make a meaningful impact through effective and accurate storytelling.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree or demonstrated expertise in English, Creative Writing, Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field.

Proven ability to craft engaging and persuasive narratives with a strong portfolio of written work.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Google Docs, with experience in formatting and document management.

Exceptional command of the English language, including a deep understanding of spelling, grammar, and stylistic conventions across platforms.

Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently, managing tasks efficiently and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.

Preferred: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, with the ability to write effectively.

Time Commitment: 10 hours per week
